Redesign for an iOS Mobile App
Redesign for an iOS Mobile App
Rebis is a video clip streaming platform displaying a diverse discovery experience in popular media across all streaming services. The goal is to help users spend more time streaming and less time deciding. Rebis showcases the best diverse talent and scenes from film and television. The personalized curation and playlists are based on users' moods, interests, cultural relevance, and friend recommendations. Rebis is building the recommendations economy with a global network of curators focused on better representation.

We followed the complete design process, utilizing a variety of research techniques to gain knowledge of user habits and pain points, mapping the trends, ideate, design and test solutions that validate our findings.
The Goal : To gather quantitative data on demographics, streaming habits and find users for Interviews to learn further about their experiences while discovering and streaming media.
Key findings
The Goal : To understand user behaviors and habits around watching clips of movies and television shows. Also, learn about experiences while going through the discovery and onboarding process on other platforms, identify any pain points in their journey and uncover opportunity areas to build a new experience.
Participants : 5 users
A Competitive/Comparative analysis was conducted with brands, that are preferred by the users and are well established in streaming media and social networking, to understand the key features and their functionality.
With these key insights from different research steps , we defined our User Persona, Amber and her Journey of discovering and deciding the content she wants to stream in the absence of Rebis.
Amber began her journey with a relaxed mood but ended up being unfulfilled. Mapping revealed the pain points and opportunities to make her experience better in discovering and interacting with media thereby helping in defining the problem statement.
Amber needs a seamless experience to discover and engage with relevant content because decision fatigue prevents her from enjoying her experience.
The problem was further synthesized into 4 HMWs that helped reframing our insights into opportunity areas and ideate on key findings during user research.
Answering the 4 HMWs lead to understanding and ideating userflows , screens and navigation to make the user journey seamless. As a start, the team went through a design studio : sketching out ideas for onboarding screens, the main feed page where the users will watch the content and the screens for the new features that Rebis has to offer.
Creating userflows helped identify the screens and navigation required for implementing features and overall app functionality.

As a way to impart a greater understanding of the process, wireflows were created to present the userflows to the client.

A Usability Testing with 5 participants on Midi-fid Prototype revealed some opportunities for improvement, before diving into Hi-Fid stage. Each Participant was given 6 tasks and were asked to rate their experience.
The first task was exploring onboarding. The initial design used ideas of gamification and was built to help create a connection between the user and the app. The mood wheel was changed to a mood picker with emojis to correlate the activity and function of the activity better. A progress bar was added which helped users with the process.
The wheel was changed from moods to genres to make an interactive onboarding that can help with the discover page curation. A quick tutorial was added to help understand the new features of the app and provide an initial foundation for the user before they actually use the app.
A huge component of any app is the icons they use. This is how the user navigates throughout the app. The talent icon was changed to one with Rebis colors to better understand the functionality of the icon as Rebis’s Talent Spotlight. The heart icon was also changed to the like button. This took out the confusion of heart meaning add to favourites. Furthermore to reduce confusion the nav bar icons were labeled.
Users were confused about saving clips and movies. As a result, we removed the add to watchlist icon from the share flow keeping it just to the movie info page as users explore movie information before deciding what to watch. They can then use watchlist icon to save the movie poster for future reference.
A style guide was created to not only give a sense of consistency but also as a first step into branding for Rebis on the grounds of brand colors, icons, font-family, and assets. Rebis did not have an established style guide so colors were picked from the initial material provided by the client and were used as a reference.
Icons were picked based on the universality of other apps to make the user feel familiarized. Furthermore, the font family came from the test flight that client had provided. New assets were designed for categories of curators on the platform. A gradient highlight ring represents diverse actor and the same gradient was used in Talent Spotlight icon which showcases a diverse actor of the week.
Amber has had another long day and wants to relax in her free time before bed. Her expectations are still the same but now her mood has improved with the introduction of the Rebis app.
Hi-fid User testing revealed both success and scope of improvement. The tasks were centered around examining the function and use of the main flows such as the onboarding, playlist, share, and discovery.
A Usability Testing with 5 participants, different for each phase, Test Flight of app provided by the client, Mid-fid and Hi-fid Prototype was conducted. This revealed ease in understanding and usability of app leading to increased willingness to interact with the platform to discover media. The users were asked to rate their experience out of 10 based on app design and ease of use.
This project was 'The First' of a Client experience as UX designer. When working on a client's project, it becomes extremely vital to an external team like ours to be able to collaborate closely with the client's team to understand the business goals and communicate research finding and relevant solutions effectively. I was fortunate to have Rebis as a Client and am grateful to client team for their time and support.
There is always a scope for improvement in everything and so in this design.
Next in the redesign, I’d like to:
I absolutely enjoyed this mobile app design experience and looking forward to my next opportunity.
